The Pacific Men’s Tennis Team has improved their record to 11-4 with a 6-1 victory of Gonzaga University. The Tigers came out quick, feisty, and determined. At #1 doubles, Sem Verbeek and Denis Stolyarov won 8-2 while Alex Golding and Alex Hamilton won at #2 8-0. Due to travel conflicts, Pacific and Gonzaga coaches agreed to stop the doubles when the doubles point was decided leaving Daniel Alameh and Ben Mirkin up 7-2 at #3.
The Gonzaga team is much improved this year with one of the top regionally ranked players at the #1 spot, Alvaro Nazal. Nazal won the lone point for the Zags in three sets in an impressive match at #1 against Alex Golding. It was two styles of play clashing, with the 10 point tiebreak in the third set favoring the grinder, Nazal. Golding, the Tigers lone senior plays a classic forward moving game with a beautiful one hander, powerful forehands, and a natural serve and volley style of play. The Tigers dominated from numbers 2-6 winning all in straight sets. Sem Verbeek (2), Denis Stolyarov (3), Daniel Alameh (4), Ben Mirkin (5), and Alex Hamilton (6) held up the top 6 lineup. Defeating Gonzaga earned the Tigers their 5th victory over a WCC opponent this season. The only WCC loss was to the then #5 Pepperdine Waves.
The Tigers next face the Nevada Wolfpack at the Hal Nelson Tennis Courts on Friday April 6. Be sure to come out and support the Tigers as they have only three home matches left.
